VAN

Value Added Network. See VPN.

 

VB Script

Scripting language, based on Visual Basic, used for adding functionality to Web pages.

 

VBA

Visual Basic for Applications.  A cut down version of Visual Basic that can be used with Microsoft’s Front Office products. It is most closely associated with MS Access. But is creeping into server side applications as well.

 

Verbot

A software simulation of a person or icon that communicates verbally with the user.

 

Vertical portal

See vortal.

 

Virtual Reality

A digital simulation of the real world. Immersed virtual reality is three dimensional giving the feeling that the user is in another world.

 

Virus

Programme or macro that performs a function usually not in the interests of the unaware user.

 

Visual Basic

A software development environment, From Microsoft, designed to facilitate the development of systems with a graphical user interface. 

 

Visual C++

Microsoft’s version of C++.  It has taken C++ and added functionality to enable developers to build a GUI interface.  This capability is not available with standard C++.

 

Visual InterDev

Produced by Microsoft, this is a combination of web page programming tools, which allow developers to build applications using HTML, ASP and scripting languages such as VBScript. It also provides tools for database development. Thus enabling the building of sophisticated web applications.

 

Visual Studio

Produced by Microsoft, this is a suite of development tools used for application development.  It offers the capability of developing software using VC++, VJ++, Visual Foxpro, Visual Basic and Visual Interdev.

 

VM

This is an early IBM operating system.  It was to be replaced by MVS, but instead became part of the next few generations of IBM operating systems.  Hence VM/MVS and VM/ESA etc.

 

VM/ESA

Virtual Machine/Extended System Architecture.  This is one of the older operating systems that runs on IBM’s System/390 range of computers.  It is still supported today.

 

VME

ICL’s proprietary server operating system.

 

VMS

The operating system associated with the DEC (Digital) Vax range of computers.

 

VoIP

Voice over Internet Protocol. A standard / technology for sending voice traffic over the Internet. A way of making long-distance calls at local call charges .

 

Vortal

Vertical portal. A portal that offers services / information, specialising in only one particular area. E.g. golf, knitting, poodles.

 

VPN

Virtual Private Network. A network that makes use of the public network but does so in a very secure manner. It offers better security than the Internet and is cheaper than leased lines.

 

VRML

Virtual reality Modeling Language.

 

VSE

Virtual System Environment.  See VSE/ESA.

 

VSE/ESA

Virtual System Environment/Extended System Architecture.  This is one of the older operating systems that runs on IBM’s System/390 range of computers.  It is still supported today.
