Produced by Microsoft, this is a
combination of web page programming tools, which allow developers to build
applications using HTML, ASP and scripting languages such as VBScript. It
also provides tools for database development. Thus enabling the building of
sophisticated web applications.

development tools used for application development. It offers the capability of developing software using VC++,
VJ++, Visual Foxpro, Visual Basic and Visual Interdev.

|
This is an early IBM operating system. It was to be replaced by MVS, but instead
became part of the next few generations of IBM operating systems. Hence VM/MVS and VM/ESA etc.

Architecture. This is one of the
older operating systems that runs on IBM’s System/390 range of
computers. It is still supported
today.

|
Voice over Internet Protocol. A standard
/ technology for sending voice traffic over the Internet. A way of making
long-distance calls at local call charges .

Vertical portal. A portal that offers services
/ information, specialising in only one particular area. E.g. golf, knitting,
poodles.

Virtual Private Network. A network that
makes use of the public network but does so in a very secure manner. It offers
better security than the Internet and is cheaper than leased lines.
